New haven east rock park8/30/2023 ![]() ![]() For novice birdwatchers, there's a short nature trail along the Mill River with interpretive signs depicting local fauna. A keen eye might spot a beaver improving its dam in the Mill River, and flocks of wild turkeys are on regular patrol. The park plays host to a remarkable variety of wildlife. Not surprisingly, Elizabeth McDonald, chose the beloved face of East Rock as her subject for a series of five mosaic panels. Park ranger on site Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The summit offers an excellent view of New Haven Green and Long Island Sound. It features the historic Soldier & Sailors Monument, the Pardee Rose Garden & Greenhouses, sports fields and over 8 miles of hiking trails. East Rock rests just north of Interstate 91 and just a mile northeast of the center of New Haven.East Rock residents travel down Whitney Avenue for a quick 10 to 15-minute commute to Yale University and Downtown New Haven. Its nearest visible neighbor along the same formation is West Rock, visible from the summit and points along the way. Wilbur Cross High School sits at the base of New Haven's prominent geological feature,: East Rock, a vertical red-faced trap rock ridge that rises 365 feet above sea level. With 425 acres, East Rock Park is the largest in New Haven. Residents of the neighborhood to which it lends its name can be seen jogging, biking, and hiking its trails all four seasons of the year, and its ample picnic areas at base and summit are a magnetic draw throughout the warmer months.Įast Rock is a traprock ridge belonging to the Metacomet Ridge. western face and the white granite Civil War monument that rises from it, the eponymous rock is by far the most conspicuous landmark in the park, which also encompasses the humbler summits of Indian Head and Snake Rock. Topping a promontory at the highest point in East Rock Park, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument is visible for miles. East Rock Park is often active, but never over-populated, with families picnicking, groups doing Yoga and hikers and bikers galore. This summer, Friends of East Rock Park volunteers and Youth Work employees worked hard over. Considering how close it is to the business district and Yale, it offers wildlife, lessons in history, geology and geography and is always free and accessible. Yale Bowl, Shubert Theater and New Haven Green are also in the area if youre searching for a few more things to do. The road leading to the top of East Rock is a great bike ride more than amply rewarded by the view from the top-and the exciting ride back down! From the edge of East Rock Park you can see all of New Haven, as well as the New Haven Harbor and Long Island Sound. Not only is the view second-to-none, East Rock Park is home to the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial which is among the finest military monuments in the country-it was just refurbished a few years ago and is immaculate. ![]()
